SafeTALK Overview

This 3.5 hour workshop is the result of more than twenty years of experience in developing effective suicide prevention programs. It prepares community members from all backgrounds to become suicide alert by using four basic TALK steps to help people with thoughts of suicide.

Learning Objectives

  • Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts may be present

  • Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked

  • Move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide

  • Apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe) to connect a person with thoughts of suicide to suicide first aid intervention caregivers

  • Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further suicide-safer help

Audience

Participants don’t need any formal preparation to attend the training - anyone age 15 or older who wants to make a difference can learn the safeTALK steps. Participants can include but are not limited to: parents and caregivers; family and friends; youth; natural helpers and advisors; educators and ministers; health practitioners; justice, law enforcers, emergency workers, and community volunteers.

Certificate

All safeTALK participants will receive a 24-page, color safeTALK resource book, a wallet card summarizing the helping steps, stickers to help identify them as trained suicide alert helpers and a certificate of completion.
